When you think about the recruitment partners you trust most with your portfolio, what earns that trust, and how have we demonstrated it in practice?
For me, trust comes down to whether someone actually understands the world our founders are operating in, or whether they're just telling you what you want to hear. Scene gets it. They take the time to understand where a founder is in their journey, not just the job spec, and they calibrate accordingly. But what really underpins it is simpler than that - Tom and Pete genuinely love what they do, and you can feel it. It's never transactional with them. That makes a huge difference when you're asking someone to represent your portfolio to candidates.
Can you share an example of where our work had a tangible impact on a portfolio company's trajectory, whether that was growth, execution speed, or leadership quality?
The hires Scene placed for some of our founders came in at moments where getting the right person quickly and at the right level genuinely shifted execution speed. In VC-backed companies, a three-month delay on a key hire can mean missing a fundraise window or losing momentum in a market. Scene moved fast and the quality was there, that's a rare combination.
What do you think we understand particularly well about working with VC-backed companies that generalist recruiters often miss?
Scene has a startup mentality themselves and that's the main difference. They operate the way the best startups do: lean, fast, no unnecessary process. They understand that a hire at Series A isn't the same hire at Series C, even if the title is identical. Generalist recruiters tend to match keywords on a CV. Scene matches the person to the stage and to the reality of what building a company actually looks like day to day.
What do you see as our USPs (speed/quality/cost)?
All three matter, but if I had to rank them: quality first, speed second, and cost as a strong enabler. The network is wide, deep, and genuinely relevant to the startup world. They're not repurposing a corporate talent pool. The pricing and business model reflect that same startup mentality, it's built for how VC-backed companies actually work, not for how traditional recruitment agencies want to charge. And on top of all that, Tom and Pete find real joy in what they do, and that energy is contagious. It's always a pleasure working with people who care that much.

"Tom and Pete love what they do, and it comes through in every process. If you want a partner who thinks like a founder, talk to Scene."
How do we balance the needs of founders with the expectations of investors when supporting a portfolio company?
Most recruiters don't even try to hold both sides. Founders want someone who can operate in ambiguity and move fast. Investors want to see that the hire de-risks execution and adds credibility ahead of the next raise. Scene gets both, they'll push back on a founder if the brief is too narrow, and they understand what investors look for in a leadership team without defaulting to "safe" hires.
How do we act as a valuable partner to you as a Fund, as well as to your Port Co's?
Having a recruitment partner I can confidently point founders to - knowing the experience will be good and the candidates will be relevant - is genuinely valuable. It saves us time, it builds trust with our founders, and it means we're not scrambling every time a portfolio company needs to hire. Scene has become part of our toolkit, not a one-off engagement.
From your perspective as an investor, how does working with us reduce risk in the hiring process for your portfolio?
The biggest risk in early-stage hiring is a bad hire - it costs time, money, and morale at a stage when none of those are in surplus. Scene reduces that risk because they understand the environment these hires are going into. They're placing someone into a company where the job description might change in six months, the team is small enough that one person shapes the culture, and the margin for error is thin. Their network and speed mean founders aren't forced to settle because the process dragged on.
If you were introducing us to another fund or founder, how would you describe what it's like to work with us?
"They get startups - not as a pitch line, but in how they actually operate. They move fast, the network is excellent, and the pricing makes sense for the stage. But what really sets them apart is the people behind it. Tom and Pete love what they do, and it comes through in every process. If you want a partner who thinks like a founder, talk to Scene."
